Emotional trading is the #1 reason traders fail. Learn the 3-step “Pause & Reset” method to stop fear and greed from ruining your trades.
How to Stop Emotional Trading: The 3-Step “Pause & Reset” Method
We’ve all been there. The market dips, your heart races, your hands get sweaty, and you hit “Sell” before your brain can process the chart.
Or, the market pumps, and you buy in a frenzy, ignoring your stop loss.
Emotional trading isn’t a character flaw. It’s a biological reaction. Your brain is wired to fear loss and crave reward. But in trading, those instincts are your enemy.
The good news? You can rewire them.
Here is the 3-Step Pause & Reset Method that I use to stay calm when the market is chaotic.
Step 1: The Physical Pause
When you feel that surge of emotion (fear, greed, excitement), STOP. Do not click the mouse. Do not touch the keyboard.
The Action:
- Stand up from your chair.
- Walk away from the screen for 60 seconds.
- Take three deep breaths. Inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 4, exhale for 4.
Why it works: This breaks the “amygdala hijack” (your brain’s fight-or-flight response). It forces your prefrontal cortex (the logical part) to come back online. You cannot make a rational decision while you are in a state of panic.
Step 2: The “Why” Interrogation
Once you are calm, ask yourself the hard question: “Why do I want to take this trade right now?”
Be brutally honest.
- Is it because the setup matches my strategy?
- Or is it because I’m bored?
- Or am I trying to prove I was right about the last trade?
If the answer isn’t “The setup is perfect,” you have your answer: No trade.
Step 3: The Pre-Trade Ritual
Before you enter, go through your checklist (download our free [Pre-Trade Checklist] here).
- Check your risk.
- Check your exit.
- Check your state of mind.
- If you pass all three, execute. If not, walk away.

Consistency is the Key
Doing this once is easy. Doing it every single time you feel an emotion is the challenge.
It takes practice. It takes patience. And it takes a deep understanding of your own psychology.
If you find yourself struggling to stick to this method, it’s likely because you haven’t identified your specific triggers yet.
